Other birds brought to the farm may carry infectious diseases. Wild birds may transmit diseases to commercial birds. Some diseases such as salmonella and coliformes may be mother-to-offspring transmitted through eggs.

Bad hygiene may also produce health problems. Once the place is contaminated, any residuals from birds previously infected may become a recurrent problem.
Disease Prevention
Clean and disinfect the facilities in the following manner:
" Get all the birds out of the quarters. Clean away all food leftovers and get all the mobile equipment out.
" Clean the roof and walls with water by using a hose before taking the bed out. Get the bed as far away as possible.
" Clean the pieces of equipment and all the things that you will use again and make any necessary repairs.
" Wash the quarters thoroughly with a high pressure machine in order to eliminate am manure deposits.
" Disinfect with some water soluble substance, such as quaternary ammonium, phenol, ionosphoros, or chloride.
" Use a poultry use approved insecticide. It is better to do so 15 days before taking the animals into the quarters.
" Replace the bed and return the equipment.
" Close quarters and let them empty for two to four weeks.
